Our discussion this evening was about Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

You can test your own urine by buying a Testing Kit from Amazon UK. You do however need to make sure you follow the instructions well and if you are not sure please do go and see your GP.

Drugs commonly recommended for simple UTIs include:

  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, others
  • Fosfomycin (Monurol) 3 g granules (one sachet) for oral solution – a one stop treatment.
  • Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Macrobid)
  • Cephalexin (Keflex)
  • Ceftriaxone.

 

What are the main causes of UTI?

The following factors can increase the likelihood of developing a UTI:

  • sexual intercourse, especially if more frequent, intense, and with multiple or new partners.
  • diabetes.
  • poor personal hygiene.
  • problems emptying the bladder completely.
  • having a urinary catheter.
  • bowel incontinence.
  • blocked flow of urine.
  • kidney stones.
